We deal with unexpected change by building routines

What a girl in China and I have in common

As usual here on the blog, I've been gathering inspiration by lurking on some YouTube videos, Quora, Reddit, Pinterest, and other blog pages.

A few months ago, I stumbled across a YouTube channel called Tapiocapress, by a lovely girl called Evelyn. She is a corporate dropout Chinese girl who has lived in the US and is now back in China, living with her boyfriend and 2 pets. She talks a lot about finding purpose, taking the leap of faith to build a life that makes sense to you, budgeting and finances, and alternatives to corporate life, all while taking us through urban life in different cities in China. Today, I came across a short format video of hers that touched on the power of building routines when facing unexpected changes in our lives. Of course, that got me thinking.

As you might already know from one of my previous posts, I will be facing another period of living alone and working remotely, not by my own choice.

Recapping my unexpected changes

My partner's line of work demands him to work on the road from time to time, and that's why I moved to the small beach town I'm living in right now. Although I now like living here, it was quite an adaptation process. And what really helped was building a routine.

I'm now working full-time again and my routine has changed since my last post about it. That being said, now more than ever, I find myself holding on to it, seeking to enhance and refine it, so it becomes a haven I can carry with me wherever I go.

My routine

Here are the things that I cherish the most in my routine:

  • getting to sleep early (before 11 pm)

  • waking up between 7 and 7:30 am

  • my short, sweet, and comforting skincare/makeup routine

  • taking my dog out for her morning walk and basking in the sun before work

  • start my work day by looking over all messages from the last day and new ones from people in other timezones and feel prepared to start the first meeting of the day

  • meeting up with my work colleagues every morning and checking on every client we had, while keeping things light and talking about our lives as well

  • having a 15-minute break in the afternoon when the street is calm, the sun is still out, and getting to play with my dog in our yard

  • going to the gym every Monday and Thursday night (I'm still trying to convince myself of that one, but I love getting back from it)

  • having a nice hot shower every night after dinner

  • hear my dog breathing by my side when falling asleep

What I noticed while writing this list down is more than cherishing the routine in and on itself, I love romanticizing little moments in it. How the little details make me feel grateful for having this routine.

What my routine brought me

What I also realized recently is how paying attention to the little details actually grounds me and makes my average, everyday life, that much better to reminisce upon. It's the little moments and rituals woven into it. The act of romanticizing these small elements adds depth and meaning to my life. But why is that?

Paying attention to the little details in our daily routine can have a profound impact on our overall well-being. It's about recognizing the beauty in the mundane and finding joy in the everyday.

It teaches us gratitude, and mindfulness, emotional resilience, and creates enhanced memories to look back on.

Our routines and the details in them become emotional anchors. When life throws unexpected challenges our way, having these small comforts to look forward to can provide a source of strength and emotional resilience.
